England’s Jordan Henderson is set to miss the rest of the World Cup. According to NY Times, he requires wrist surgery after a freak injury in the last 16 win over Mexico.

The Brentford midfielder slipped while climbing over the advertising hoardings during the celebrations following the 3-2 victory at the Azteca Stadium, landing awkwardly.

He left the field on a stretcher and received oxygen, then was taken to hospital in Mexico City. He did not travel back to England’s training base in Kansas City with the rest of Thomas Tuchel’s squad, and a member of England’s medical staff stayed with him.

It is a significant blow for the 36-year-old former Liverpool captain, who was an unused substitute against Mexico. Post-match, Tuchel said he was sad about the injury, described it as serious, said Henderson was in hospital and added he did not know the procedure.

Jude Bellingham, who scored twice to set up a quarter-final meeting with Norway, said Henderson was in some bother and that the medical team had everything under control. He added he could not give further detail but the squad were there to support him.
