Tottenham Hotspur suffered yet another defeat in the Premier League on Sunday, losing 2-1 to Ipswich Town.
Spurs have now lost back-to-back games in all competitions, having suffered a 3-2 defeat against Galatasaray on Thursday in the Europa League.
It is their inconsistent performance in the league that has been really concerning. Spurs lost 1-0 against Crystal Palace last month, and they responded strongly with a 4-1 win against Aston Villa at home last week.
However, ahead of the international break, they lost momentum once again, failing to maintain their high standards against a lower opponent.
Ange Postecoglou said after the game that the inconsistent form is down to him rather than his players.
Former Aston Villa striker Stan Collymore didn’t miss the chance to brutally mock Tottenham fans after the game.
He wrote on X: “Don’t worry Spurs fans, you win the “we were back to our best for a half against Villa for 45 mins last week”, award. Did Ipswich “come out to play” enough for you this week?”
It was a massive win for the Tractor Boys, who moved out of the bottom three at the expense of Crystal Palace.
The home team were treated to a smattering of boos after the final whistle. Spurs lacked composure throughout the game, and it took them 70 minutes to get back into some sort of attacking rhythm, only after Rodrigo Bentancur scored.
Dominik Solanke’s late effort was blocked by Ipswich goalkeeper Arijanet Muric, and that was the closest they had come to level the tie.
Spurs enjoyed 66.3% possession and registered 17 shots, but Ipswich were still comfortable for much of the closing stages.
Tottenham failed to build a sustained spell of pressure, and this is one aspect they need to improve after the international break.
They conceded an early goal for the 13th time in their 15 home games in 2024, and it clearly highlights where the problem lies.
Spurs have won eight of their last 12 home games coming from behind, but it is hardly desirable to be chasing games every week.
