Chelsea boss Enzo Maresca has pretty much repeated a famous phrase of Jose Mourinho after Chelsea lost to Newcastle United last night.
The Blues were well off it as they went down 2-0 to Eddie Howe’s side who were looking to get some revenge for the defeat against Chelsea in the league at the weekend.
Chelsea’s players individually and collectively were shocking, and Maresca also got a lot wrong as well. Chelsea should be gutted to not be advancing to the next round of a competition that they had a fair chance of going far in and represented one of the best chances of winning silverware. Many of the player, who have been good lately, need to hang their heads after this one.
But there was an incident that might have helped them, even though personally I do not like dwelling on things like this or looking for excuses when we lose.
Anthony Gordon could have easily been sent off on another day after a bad tackle of Marc Cucurella, and Masresca was visibly fuming with the decision at the time.
Maresca has refused to speak about the Referee and this decision, just as Mourinho once famously did back in the day.
Mourinho’s quote soon became a heavily used GIF and meme across the whole footballing community. And now, Maresca might have created one of his own with his response to a question in the post-match press conference last night.
Q. You didn’t seem to be very happy with the Anthony Gordon tackle on Marc Cucurella. Do you think it deserved more than a yellow card?
Maresca: “I prefer not to talk about the referee.”
And it’s probably wise not to speak about the Ref when you are upset after a game, because it would only end in a big fine for him!
