Erik Sviatchenko shocked at recent ‘mud throwing’ at Celtic

Ex-Celtic defender Erik Sviatchenko has revealed his thoughts on Brendan Rodgers’ shock exit, with two of his former clubs preparing to face off in the Europa League tonight…

The former Denmark international joined Celtic from FC Midtjylland in January 2016, shortly before Rodgers took over the managerial reins from Ronny Deila.

Now playing for MLS club Houston Dynamo, the 34-year-old has reacted to his former manager’s resignation ahead of Celtic’s Europa League clash with table-toppers Midtjylland.

Speaking to Aaron Haire over at Celts Are Here, Sviatchenko insists he was surprised by Rodgers’ departure. “It was a shock in the sense of a resignation like there has to be some kind of disagreement and you also kind of afterwards could read with Dermot Desmond’s pretty harsh accusations towards Brendan Rodgers,” he said.

“Yeah, it’s never fun to read when you know the majority of the club is always kind of with respect and a kind of gentleman and the story behind all these things, and then suddenly you have this kind of throwing mud at each other.”

Sviatchenko added: “But yeah, I think it would definitely be a new time. I think Brendan Rodgers has done incredibly. And I think the fans need to remember that there’s always this kind of… I saw now the Champions League with Trent Alexander-Arnold, which, what, did he play 350 games for Liverpool, a youth player? And then the fans are booing. I just can’t understand.”

“It’s still a player that did so much and he chose something else. Get over it and respect it in some way. So I think remember the good times and of course be annoyed by the times that weren’t as good.”

“But there’s always time for change and maybe that’s a positive. Look at it as a positive thing instead of keeping the negative as kind of the topic.”
