Manchester City forward Erling Haaland is a doubt to face Real Madrid and Liverpool next week after sustaining a knee injury.
Haaland was substituted late on in Manchester City’s 4-0 win over Newcastle in the Premier League on Saturday. The Norwegian appeared in discomfort after jarring his knee in the clash, that saw Omar Marmoush score his first goals for the Citizens with a hat-trick.
City now face a nervous wait on Haaland’s issue. The 24-year-old is City’s leading scorer this season having netted 27 goals in 35 appearances across all competitions. His absence would be a major blow for the Blues ahead of a huge week in their season.
Pep Guardiola’s side face Real Madrid in the second leg of the Champions League play-off on Wednesday, trailing 3-2 in the tie. Following that clash with the Spanish champions, City welcome Premier League leaders Liverpool to the Etihad next weekend.
Speaking after the final whistle to BBC Sport, Guardiola eased initial fears on Haaland’s condition.
“When he went down everyone was scared but he walked off smiling and the doctor didn’t tell me bad news so hopefully he is fine.”
