Manchester City forward Erling Haaland’s outlook on a potential move to Barcelona or Real Madrid in the near future has been revealed in a new report.
Haaland is under contract at the Etihad Stadium till the end of the 2033-34 season after signing a long-term contract in January that will keep him at Manchester City by the time he will turn 34.
A release clause is likely to have been included in the Norway striker’s contract but it is currently unknown when the same gets activated and how much a suitor club will have to pay to tempt City to sell Haaland in the seasons to come.
The 25-year-old scored his seventh goal of the 2025-26 campaign on Sunday as Manchester City claimed a 1-1 draw against Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium – making it seven points in nine in a week’s worth of games against Manchester United, Napoli and Arsenal.
Haaland was subject to strong interest from Real Madrid in the months preceding his 2022 switch to the Etihad Stadium from Borussia Dortmund but Manchester City pipped their European rivals to the forward’s signature.
The Leeds-born attacker led Pep Guardiola’s side to a historic treble and their maiden UEFA Champions League title in his debut season in Manchester, breaking every goalscoring record there was to break en route to the 2022-23 Premier League Golden Boot.
Haaland has scored 131 times in 152 appearances in all competitions for the Blues in just over three seasons at the club, firmly establishing himself as one of the greatest strikers in Premier League history and currently in football.
Real Madrid and Barcelona will no doubt be keeping tabs on Manchester City’s ongoing period of transition after a busy transfer window, with doubts over Haaland’s plans at the Etihad Stadium once Guardiola departs the club as he enters the final two years of his current deal.
Football Insider have reported that Real Madrid and Barcelona eyeing sensational bids to tempt Haaland into moving to Spain in the summer of 2026, with City tipped to have cashed in on their talisman in the summer transfer window to facilitate a squad rebuild.
However, Haaland is very happy at Manchester City and has no plans to leave as things stand. Guardiola is also desperate to keep hold of his star striker and City will not entertain any approach for the Norwegian anytime soon.
It would likely take a significant drop-off from Manchester City in the Premier League and UEFA Champions League in the seasons to come, which interspersed with a potential Guardiola departure could lead to a desire from Haaland to move on from the Etihad Stadium.
However, the Scandinavian star is here to stay and there is no doubt that Haaland will want to spearhead the club he supported as a child and whom his father Alf-Inge played for, for three seasons, back to their former glory after a disappointing 2024-25 campaign.
