Napoli sporting director Giovanni Manna explains the main reason that hampered his club’s attempts to sign Manchester United winger Alejandro Garnacho.

While Chelsea were tipped to launch a late-January onslaught for the 20-year-old, the Serie A leaders were in fact the ones who made the concrete approach.

The Partenopei sold Khvicha Kvaratskhelia to Paris Saint-Germain in the middle of the transfer window, leaving them with big boots to fill on the left wing. Hence, Antonio Conte identified Garnacho as his priority target, and the two clubs held direct talks at one point.

While reports suggested that United couldn’t find an agreement with their Italian counterparts on the transfer fee, Manna explains that the main reason behind the transfer’s collapse was the player’s salary request, as it was deemed outside the club’s financial parameters.

We made an important bid to Manchester United for Garnacho. We really wanted him,” admitted the 36-year-old via Manchester Evening News.

“But we weren’t able to agree on personal terms with Alejandro as, he requested an important salary to leave in January and we must respect our players.”

When it was announced that Garnacho was set to stay at Old Trafford, the Man Utd staff reportedly breathed a collective sigh of relief, and rightfully so, as the Argentine remains one of the club’s most talented players, as a well as a fan favourite amongst the Reds faithful.

That being said, the winger’s longtime future remains shrouded in mystery, especially when he and his entourage are demanding large figures for his signature.

At the moment, Garnacho remains one of the lowest earners at the club with a weekly salary of £50k. But while the management will be looking to rectify it by offering him more suitable figures, it might not be sufficient to sway the youngster, especially with INEOS keen to drift away from the Glazers’ extravagant spending.
