The Europa League has reached the semi-final stage with the final four teams confirmed.
This week brings the semi-final clashes as we reach the business end of the competition. Athletic Bilbao are still in the hunt and have the added motivation of the final being staged at their San Mames Stadium.
Meanwhile, former winners Tottenham Hotspur and Manchester United are bidding to salvage their seasons with success. And what about Bodo/Glimt? The underdogs are the first Norwegian team to have reached a major European semi-final.
Assessing the latest BetWright odds, we’ve ranked the favourites to win the 2024/25 Europa League. All odds correct at the time of publication.
Bodo/Glimt are priced at fourth favourites with the Norwegian side the tournament’s surprise package.
The Eliteserien champions have picked up some notable scalps in European competition in recent seasons. A memorable 6-1 thrashing of Roma lives long in the memory, while FC Twente, Olympiacos and Lazio have all been beaten in Norway this season alone.
A trip north of the Artic circle to face Kjetil Knutsen’s is no easy feat. Spurs have their work cut out to navigate a semi-final tie with Norway’s first-ever European semi-finalists.
Manchester United made it into the quarter-finals after one of the most epic Europa League ties of all time.
The Red Devils trailed 4-2 to Lyon in extra time of their second leg, but recovered with three late goals to reach the last eight. It was the first time in UEFA club competition history that a team has scored twice in the 120th minute of a game.
Ruben Amorim’s team remain unbeaten in Europe this season but have struggled domestically. Currently 14th in the Premier League table, the Red Devils are set for their first bottom-half finish in England since 1990.
Success in the Europa League this season would somewhat soften the blow, securing silverware and Champions League qualification.
Athletic Bilbao are two games away from a dream European final on home soil. The final will be staged as the club’s San Mames Stadium, adding incentive for the Spanish side.
Two-time runners-up in this competition after defeats in the 1977 and 2012 finals, Athletic are hoping it’s third time lucky in 2024/25. The La Liga outfit ended a 40-year major trophy drought to win the Copa del Rey last season and closing in on Champions League qualification.
With exciting young talent such as Oihan Sancet and Nico Williams in their ranks, Athletic have the tools for success.
Tottenham Hotspur find themselves in similar territory to Manchester United – The Europa League is win or bust for their season.
Ange Postecoglou’s men are 16th in the Premier League table after a season in which injuries and inconsistencies have plagued their campaign. Europe has offered a silver lining and Spurs showed resilience to get past Eintracht Frankfurt in the previous round.
The North Londoners have not won a major trophy since 2008, but are bidding for the double carrot of European silverware and Champions League qualification. With, arguably, the kindest semi-final draw on paper, Spurs have a real chance of making the final.
After victories in 1972 and 1984, a third triumph would mean only Sevilla (6) have won this competition more than Spurs.
