Brighton have played 61 times since Evan Ferguson and Kaoru Mitoma last started together, a 2-2 draw at Leicester in December 2024. That separation will continue as both are out with ankle injuries.

Ferguson’s Roma loan has been cut short, surgery will sideline the 21-year-old for the rest of the campaign and Ireland’s March play-offs. According to NY Times, Mitoma is also facing a spell out.

He was withdrawn in the 1-0 loss to Arsenal, and Japan coach Hajime Moriyasu says he will likely miss at least the next two matches. The break before Burnley on April 11 may help, though he is doubtful for friendlies with Scotland and England later that month.

Their understanding lit up 2023, from Ferguson starring in a 4-1 win at Everton to a back-heel at Bournemouth and a 3-1 defeat of Southampton that sealed Europe.

After an ankle lay-off, Mitoma scored at Manchester City in January, then made eight league starts without a goal or assist. Head coach Fabian Hurzeler said scans were awaited and it did not look a major issue.

Ferguson’s ankle issues began in April 2023 at Chelsea and later required ligament surgery. The Athletic reports a source close to him is 90 per cent sure the Roma injury is the same, and Gasperini has indicated surgery ends his season.

He had five goals and two assists in 22 Roma games. While Hurzeler has spoken of possibly seeing a different Ferguson, a reunion next season remains uncertain.
