James Garner praised an ‘amazing performance’ as Everton ground out a 1-0 win at Aston Villa.
David Moyes’s side upset the form book to beat high-flying Aston Villa at Villa Park, courtesy of Thierno Barry’s second-half goal. The Frenchman lifted a brilliant finish into the far corner, after Emi Martinez failed to hold an attempt from Dwight McNeil.
Everton weathered a storm to earn a hard-fought win, maintaining just 36% possession, against an Aston Villa side who had won their previous 11 matches at Villa Park.
Jordan Pickford made a fantastic save to preserve Everton’s lead, getting a hand to Morgan Rogers’ effort that was destined for the top corner.
The win saw Everton bounce back from disappointing results against Brentford and Wolves in recent weeks, alongside an FA Cup exit to Sunderland.
“They’re a very good team and they have a lot of brilliant players. The lads grinded it out today. We got the chance and we took it,” Everton midfielder James Garner said to Sky Sports.
“We tried to nullify what they’re good at which is playing through the middle. We tried to block of the passing lanes and force it wide. We waited for our moment.
“We were in a sticky patch. We had to get ourselves out of this. To win away from home is hopefully the start of it.
“I think it was an amazing performance from the lads.”
