Everton have a longstanding interest in Newcastle United midfielder Sean Longstaff and there has been talk of an approach before Monday’s transfer deadline, according to the Daily Mail.
However, the Goodison Park club are unlikely to have a chance of luring the Englishman away from the St. James Park club this window as he has told the Magpies chiefs he wants to stay at his hometown club.
Newcastle exercised the option to extend the contract of Longstaff to 2026 last December, protecting his value as they remain open to selling him.
Cashing in on the 27-year-old Toons academy graduate would register as profit in PSR terms, but he wants to remain at the club beyond this month despite potential interest from Everton, and he believes he can fight for a place in the first-team plans of manager Eddie Howe.
Newcastle could play in the final of the Carabao Cup this term after beating Arsenal 2-0 in the first-leg of the semi-finals at Emirates Stadium, and Longstaff does not want to leave given that he has a chance to win silverware with his childhood club this term.
He has played 23 games across all competitions so far this term, only starting 11 of them, and a summer exit is certain if his contract is not extended.
Everton and other suitors will have to look elsewhere or wait until the end of the season before having a realistic chance of landing Longstaff, and he will hope to play a key role for Newcastle as the campaign draws to a close.
An injury or suspension in the Toons midfield could see him return temporarily to the starting XI, and he will fancy his chances of getting much-needed playing minutes going forward this season.
