Everton are reportedly plotting a sensational move for Manchester City defender John Stones

The Toffees are just three points behind fifth-placed Liverpool in the Premier League table, which gives them a great chance of qualifying for Europe.

Everton are expected to operate carefully in the transfer market this summer, focusing on free transfers and low-cost deals.

This strategy could lead them to pursue a move for Stones, who played for the Merseyside club between 2013 and 2016.

Everton are among the clubs monitoring Stones, who will be out of contract at the end of this season.

The centre-back is not expected to be offered a new deal at City

Stones has scored 19 goals in 292 appearances across all competitions since joining the club. He has helped his side win six Premier League titles and a Champions League.

However, the England international has endured a challenging 2025-26 season, making only four league starts due to injury issues.

Stones is a world-class defender who boasts plenty of experience. His track record of success and winning mentality would be beneficial to Everton.

The 31-year-old mainly operates in central defence, but can also play at right-back or step into midfield. He is highly rated for his passing ability and tactical intelligence.

Re-signing Stones would be a smart decision for Everton, as they wouldn’t have to pay a transfer fee.
