Everton have reopened talks with Chelsea over a permanent deal for Tyrique George.
According to The Athletic, negotiations are progressing over a package worth more than £20m, with an agreement potentially close this week. It would end weeks of uncertainty over the winger’s future.
The move marks a change of heart. George spent the second half of last season on loan at Goodison Park, and Everton held an option to buy worth around £25m. They initially let that clause lapse, wary of committing such a fee after a quiet loan.
His numbers on Merseyside were modest. George made 11 appearances but started just once, failing to register a goal or assist. Even so, David Moyes was impressed enough by his work rate and potential to push for a deal.
The restructured offer explains the renewed momentum. Rather than trigger the original option, Everton have returned with a lower base fee topped up by performance-related add-ons. That approach has brought the clubs back to the table on more favourable terms.
Moyes has been warm in his assessment. “We’ve enjoyed having Tyrique here, he’s been an excellent boy and his work-rate, and everything has been excellent,” the Everton boss said of the 20-year-old.
The player is keen, too. George is understood to be open to leaving Chelsea permanently in search of regular football, having found minutes hard to come by at Stamford Bridge. Everton believe he would be afforded a bigger role next season.
His exit suits Chelsea’s plans. The England Under-21 international, who has made 37 first-team appearances for the Blues, is considered surplus under new boss Xabi Alonso.
The deal caps a busy week for Everton, who have already agreed a £16.5m move for Middlesbrough’s Hayden Hackney and remain keen on further additions across the pitch.
