Everton should have had a penalty against Manchester City when 3-2 up for a foul by Bernardo Silva.

The Premier League’s Key Match Incidents panel have confirmed that the Toffees should have been awarded a spot-kick after Silva held back Everton midfielder Merlin Rohl during a corner.

Man City fought back to get a 3-3 draw against David Moyes’ men at Hill Dickinson Stadium earlier this month but could have left with nothing.

The result could prove crucial in Everton’s race to qualify for Europe as victory would have moved them within four points of the continental places.

Silva’s foul was unseen by referee Michael Oliver, and the VAR Paul Howard decided the holding had taken place before the corner was taken.

He could not intervene to award a penalty, leaving Moyes disappointed after the game.

All five members of the KMI panel agreed that it should have been given.

“There is a clear, sustained holding offence which continues as the corner is taken and the ball comes into play,” read the official report.

Man City left it very late to equalise, with Jeremy Doku’s 96th-minute goal denying the hosts all three points.

Everton should also have been given a penalty through video review in a 1-0 home loss to Arsenal in December and a 2-1 defeat at West Ham United last month.

They are the only team not to get a VAR intervention in their favour this season and will now hope their final two results will be enough to get them European football.

Everton host Sunderland on Sunday before a trip to Tottenham Hotspur next Sunday for the last game of the season, and they need to win both and hope others (Brighton & Hove Albion, Brentford and Chelsea) above them drop points to finish in the top-seven.
