Everton are set to miss out on Arsenal striker Gabriel Jesus in January, with the Brazilian set to stay put (h/t Rob Dorsett). The Toffees will have to turn to other targets.
Everton desperately need a new centre-forward with Beto and Thierno Barry fluffing their lines so far.
The pair have been blunt up top for Everton, and manager David Moyes needs new options for his roster.
Unfortunately, Everton will not be able to sign Jesus, who is recovering from an injury setback.
Jesus is a quality centre-forward on his day and would be a terrific addition to Everton’s squad, but Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta said he won’t be moving.
The Merseyside outfit would have struggled to carry the load of his £331,250k per week wages, but could have used the formula that helped them land Jack Grealish.
The inability to sign Jesus leaves the Toffees with Ivan Toney and Joshua Zirkzee on their transfer shortlist.
With those two as the only options, signing Toney is a no-brainer for the Toffees in the winter.
The 29-year-old Everton target has scored 41 goals in 59 appearances for Al Ahli since joining in a £40 million deal from Brentford in the summer of 2024.
He bagged 20 goals and created 12 big chances in the Premier League in 2022/23.
Toney should be the top target ahead of Zirkzee, who has struggled in the Premier League with Manchester United.
In Zirkzee’s best scoring season, he managed just 11 Serie A goals. The Englishman is clearly the better marksman and should be atop Everton’s January shopping list.
However, the finances involved in the Toney transfer could scupper the deal for the Toffees.
He is on astronomical wages in Saudi Arabia, and it could prove difficult to bring him to the Hill Dickinson Stadium.
