Gareth Taylor has stressed the importance of every Barclays Women’s Super League game City will play between now and the end of the season, starting with our trip to Chelsea on Saturday.
It’s our first encounter with the title holders in the 2024/25 season and Chelsea sit one point behind Taylor’s team but have one game in hand.
With the importance of the game perhaps intensified with how close the league standing is between the two titans, Taylor emphasised that to City, all 15 league games could prove pivotal in the race for silverware.
“I think there is going to be many more important games after this,” began the City boss.
“I think for us we want to stay consistent, I think that’s really important. The league table at the moment looks a little lopsided because they have a game to play and of course we want to make sure that we can give the best versions of ourselves in order to get the best result.
“I think that trying to win the game for us is the objective and it never changes.
“And we have a real good opportunity to do that, particularly with some of the performances that we have seen already this season and that for us is going to be our main goal in this game, to go to win.”
Our last league trip to Chelsea saw us end their 33-game unbeaten run at Kingsmeadow, courtesy of a 1-0 win after Khadija ‘Bunny’ Shaw’s early first-half strike.
But this time Stamford Bridge will play host to our clash and Chelsea are under new leadership in Sonia Bompastor, both new challenges in our already tricky trip to the capital.
But City will be boosted by our impressive away form and consistency this season.
10 consecutive wins in all competitions and unbeaten on the road in almost a year, Taylor’s team are ready to face the task ahead.
“I think we take a lot of confidence from that,” said Taylor when informed of City’s eye-catching form on the road.
“Of course I think the players and myself don’t get to hear those type of stats, we just go from game to game.
“I think this season, 10 wins on the bounce in all competitions is what we’re hanging on to in terms of that’s what we get from the work we put in more often than not.
“This season the girls have really followed the plan well and nothing changes for Chelsea.
“We have a plan for with and without the ball which is going to be important for us. We know the areas they try to exploit, we know the areas we can potentially exploit so nothing changes in that point.
“But of course our confidence is high but we know that everything we’ve done this season has had to be earned and we are really determined to try and earn as much as we can.”
