Football League World looks at each Plymouth player who will be out of contract in the summer

Plymouth Argyle are in for an exciting end to the campaign, as Tom Cleverley's side remain in pursuit of a place in the top six of League One going into the final few weeks.

It's been a real tumultuous campaign for the Pilgrims this year, who were propping up the third tier towards the end of November. However, since December, only Lincoln City have picked up more points, and Home Park is now dreaming of a Championship return.

Because of that, though, there is uncertainty about which division Plymouth will be beginning the 2026/27 campaign in, and with the full focus on the field currently, discussions over new contracts for those whose deals expire in the summer have been put on hold recently.

Outside of loan signings, Owen Dale, Wes Harding and Alex Mitchell, these seven Argyle players are set to depart at the end of the season, barring a late contract extension.

Joe Edwards

35-year-old Joe Edwards has become part of the furniture at Home Park in the near-seven years he's spent at the club.

The versatile right-sided defender, who can also deputise in midfield, has made over 275 appearances for the Pilgrims and has been part of promotions from League Two and League One, alongside the relegation from the Championship last year.

Injury derailed his campaign last season, but he's bounced back well in League One, starting every game in this strong Plymouth run up the third-tier table.

With Edwards turning 36 in October, there'll be a conversation to be had in the summer regarding his contract situation. There's no doubting his influence at Home Park, but it's yet to be seen if Tom Cleverley and co want to go a different direction away from him.

If he does leave, you can guarantee that he'll land on his feet elsewhere, with reports linking him to multiple sides in League One and Two recently.

Joe Ralls

Joe Ralls' 15-year association with Cardiff City ended this past summer, and he ended up signing a short-term deal at Plymouth back in November. He extended that deal until the end of the season in January, but would go down with a hamstring injury just weeks later.

As it stands, the 32-year-old will not be returning to the pitch between now and May 2, but he could make his return to the squad if the Pilgrims end up finishing in the play-offs.

Regardless, his positive impact in such a short space of time, plus his Championship experience, should mean that an extension to his current deal would be a no-brainer this summer.

Brendan Galloway

Brendan Galloway's time at Home Park has been very stop-start. This is his fifth campaign at the club, yet he has only managed to play 109 times in nearly five years. This season has proven to be one of his most productive ones in terms of appearances, but he's still had his fair share of setbacks.

He made five consecutive starts in January and even chipped in with a couple of goals in that time, but as soon as he was building some momentum, a hernia operation ruled him out for a month and a half.

The Pilgrims have shown that they can pick up results without the 30-year-old on the field, so unless the price is right, the former Everton man may be finding a new home this summer.

Conor Hazard

Conor Hazard signed a three-year deal at Plymouth when he arrived from Celtic ahead of their first campaign back in the Championship in 2023.

Over that time, he was in and out of contention in his first season and then last year and in the current campaign, injuries have stopped the Northern Irishman from getting a real long run in the side.

The 28-year-old began the campaign with a knee injury, and would then spend time on the sidelines in March with a calf problem. Despite this, Plymouth have looked safe with him in goal, and he's kept more clean sheets this season than he had in his two Championship terms combined.

Plymouth should be happy to continue Hazard's time in Devon, but will be wary about the keeper's injury record.

Luca Ashby-Hammond

And from Plymouth's number one, to the backup shot-stopper. Luca Ashby-Hammond, unfortunately, hasn't had as much luck in goal as Hazard has this year.

The 25-year-old joined the Pilgrims on a one-year deal after impressing on trial over the summer, and was immediately thrown into action due to Hazard's injury. As covered, Plymouth's start to the season was poor, and their defence wasn't being helped by their goalkeeper.

His brief stint back in goal in January saw the Pilgrims concede seven goals in three games, and while he did finally pick up his second clean sheet of the campaign away at Wigan Athletic in March, he was back on the bench once Hazard returned.

For a backup keeper, Plymouth could be on the lookout for better, especially if Hazard's injury issues continue.

Ayman Benarous

Ayman Benarous hasn't found the fresh start he was likely hoping for at Plymouth after he departed Bristol City in the summer. The 22-year-old hadn't played since the 2021/22 campaign, following successive ACL injuries.

The midfielder did get some chances towards the start of the season, but would soon fall out of favour to the point where he was deregistered from the League One squad heading into the second half of the campaign.

He ended up getting added back in due to Ralls' injury, but other than some sporadic unused substitute appearances, he's been left by the wayside.

Benarous only signed a one-year deal at Home Park, and he may be on the move again as he looks to finally get his promising career back on track.

Zak Baker

Academy graduate Zak Baker is yet to make his professional debut for the club, despite squad appearances in numerous competitions this year, especially when Hazard was out with injury.

The 21-year-old shot-stopper has had local loan moves to the likes of Tiverton and Plymouth Parkway this season.

After penning a new one-year deal last summer, the same may end up on the table again this coming off-season, especially if it's to remain the third-choice keeper at Home Park.
