There has rarely been such a personnel farce at FC Bayern. After months of hesitation, internal power games and growing pressure, Dayot Upamecano is now on the verge of extending his contract with the German record champions. The club and player have reached an agreement and the final formalities are currently being completed
The news came thick and fast on Monday evening: several German and international media outlets unanimously reported that Dayot Upamecano had agreed to extend his contract with FC Bayern, following an increasingly heated poker game in which Munich had recently clearly indicated that they were prepared to withdraw their offer if necessary
It was precisely this point that seems to have tipped the scales. After the pressure on the player’s side was noticeably increased, the U-turn followed. As Sky transfer expert Florian Plettenberg reports, all outstanding issues have now been resolved. „Everything is ready. Dayot Upamecano and FC Bayern have agreed on a contract extension. The formalities are currently being completed,“ said Plettenberg. In plain language, this means that the new contract, which runs until 2030, will be signed shortly
After Upamecano’s commitment, there were still slight doubts as to whether Bayern would stick to their offer or possibly renegotiate it, as the deadline had passed

The end of this saga is particularly noteworthy. In recent weeks, the tone between the club and advisors had become much more heated. Internally, there was talk of a power play, with financial details in particular – keyword hand money and exit clause – causing delays
According to information from SPORT1, Upamecano finally took the initiative himself on Monday evening. The French international is said to have personally picked up the phone and given Bayern bosses his final commitment, a move that is seen internally as decisive and put an end to the months-long tug-of-war
If everything goes according to plan, FC Bayern will officially announce the contract extension this week, bringing a tough and at times curious contract wrangle to a conciliatory end – and giving Munich important planning security in the center of defence.
