Robbie Savage has played down talk that he could leave Forest Green Rovers to become the next manager of Blackburn Rovers.

Forest Green Rovers boss Robbie Savage has played down talk he could become Blackburn’s next manager, as he insists reports linking him with the vacancy are ‘pure speculation’.

Rovers have had a difficult season so far, with Valerien Ismael losing his job last week, so the hierarchy are now on the lookout for his successor.

In his absence, Blackburn picked up a crucial three points against Sheffield Wednesday on Tuesday, which saw them move out of the relegation zone on goal difference. However, they’re still in a precarious position, so the next appointment will be crucial.

Since Ismael’s exit, a host of names have been linked with the job, and recent reports have claimed that Savage is under consideration for the role.

The 51-year-old has a connection to Rovers from his playing days, as he made 100 appearances in blue-and-white during what was a successful period for the club.

As well as that, Savage is developing a reputation as a good coach in non-league, having won promotion with Macclesfield before joining National League outfit Forest Green in the summer, and they currently sit fourth as they seek a return to the EFL.

Yet, Savage has played down talk he could return to Ewood Park in the dugout, as he told Forest Green’s media that there is nothing in the talk, as he made it clear he is concentrating on his current job.

“It’s purely speculation. I loved my time there, a brilliant football club, and I loved all my old clubs that I played for, but it’s purely speculation. Listen, it will be somebody else’s name tomorrow.

“I love my time here, I’ve got a great relationship with Dale, Asif and Mark, and we’re on a journey, a project, and it’s something I can’t wait to see it through. So, yeah, it’s purely speculation, and it will be someone else tomorrow. (There’s) nothing at all (for the fans to worry about).”

We know that things can change very quickly in football, but Savage’s comments here suggest there is nothing in the reports suggesting he could take over.

In truth, that’s probably the right decision, as, despite his love for the club, there’s no denying this would be a massive risk for Blackburn to take.

Savage’s only experience has come in non-league, so to get thrown into a Championship relegation fight would be a massive step-up, and you would understand if the club targets someone who has been there and done it.
