Ex-Arsenal and Juventus man wants Celtic player to be dropped

A number of Celtic players have faced heavy criticism in recent times, as the Hoops lost the recent Glasgow Derby against the Rangers in their own backyard, something that had not happened in almost five years. It also meant that Brendan Rodgers' side had lost back-to-back games against the Ibrox club.

One player who was not at his best on the day is Kasper Schmeichel. The Danish goalkeeper, who has done a very good job since arriving in the summer as a free agent, caused issues at the back for his own defence.

Schmeichel followed that performance up by conceding five goals against Portugal during this international break, even though he managed to save a penalty from Cristiano Ronaldo. To make matters worse, he got injured on the night and it remains to be seen how long he will be out of action for.

Former Arsenal and Juventus striker, Nicklas Bendtner, who also made more than 80 appearances for Denmark over the course of his career, believes that it is time for change between the posts. As reported by The Celtic Way, he said:

"My question mark for the Danish team is around the goalkeeper."Kasper is 38 now - I like him a lot, but he cost us a lot of goals in Portugal. He has grown bigger."I admire the man a great deal, but when he is 38 in such an important position and you have two Premier League keepers behind you, it’s time for the coach Brian Riemer to change it."I would expect Mads Hermansen to play in our friendlies in June to see how he copes with it."And once Leicester get relegated, I’d imagine half of the Premier League will try to sign him."

So, it is very clear that Bendtner ones somebody younger to be given a chance in goal for Denmark. And it is not hard to understand that thought process, especially with the World Cup coming up.

On the other hand, Celtic might have to consider the same if Schmeichel's injury proves to be a long-term one. Such issues are already tough to recover from, and especially so at 38 years of age.

If Schmeichel has to spend months out recovering, then Celtic must consider signing a new number one goalkeeper in the summer, despite the Dane's recent one-year contract extension. Hopefully, the Hoops won't find themselves in a situation where they need to do that.
