Ex-Fulham manager Rene Meulensteen says Harry Wilson’s move to Leeds United is a bit of a sideways step.

Wilson left Fulham after running down his deal, having produced 10 goals and seven assists in 36 Premier League games last season. Leeds pursued him since deadline day last summer, finally landing the 29-year-old on a four-year contract. He has travelled to the USA with Daniel Farke’s squad.

"Harry Wilson will probably have a better contract at Leeds than he had at Fulham," he told Andy’s Bet Club. "Something about the move must have triggered his interest, although he might have been hoping for a team in Europe when he was playing so well last season."

"It is a bit of a sideways step. He is a player who can make a difference and will definitely help Leeds. He must be happy with the move to sign such a long contract."

Wilson said after signing that Leeds’ earlier pursuit was a factor, as was the influence of Welsh team-mates including Ethan Ampadu. He hopes to offer a glimpse of his quality against boyhood club Wrexham this weekend.

Leeds meet the Championship side in the early hours of Sunday morning UK time, then play Sunderland and Liverpool. RB Leipzig, Manchester United and FC Augsburg follow before the Premier League opener at Nottingham Forest on Saturday 22 August.
