Legendary former Nerazzurri captain Beppe Bergomi feels that Inter Milan were not sufficient in preventing counterattacks against Juventus.

Bergomi criticized the Nerazzurri’s second half performance in the Derby d’Italia thriller on Sky Sport Italia, via FCInterNews.

Both Inter and Juventus enjoyed the lead at one stage or another of yesterday’s Derby d’Italia.

But in the end, the Nerazzurri and the Bianconeri shared the points. And they did so with a remarkable 4-4 scoreline.

This was a testament to how open the match was, right up until the end.

But there was a period where it didn’t look like it would have to be that way.

When Denzel Dumfries scored Inter’s fourth goal in the second half, it gave the Nerazzurri a two-goal cushion over the Bianconeri.

And that was not necessarily an unfair reflection of the run of play. Inter had been creating chances all evening long.

But at that stage, Inter perhaps needed to simply take the sting out of the game.

“Taking the sting out” is hardly what Inter did yesterday, however.

The match remained very much an open contest. Inter did have their chances and dangerous situations of their own, and could have perhaps scored even more goals to make it a blowout.

But that was at the expensive of defensive solidity. There was a sense that even with a solid advantage to protect, Inter were still rolling the dice.

Former Inter captain Bergomi argued that the Nerazzurri’s “limitations from the start of the season have come out.”

“With a two-goal advantage, Inter took the bait in Juve’s efforts to make them more open,” he continued.

“You can’t afford these kinds of mistakes and carelessness,” Bergomi said sternly.

“At 4-2, you can’t be getting counterattacked at home,” he declared.
