Francesco Toldo recalls how a situation with his former Inter Milan teammate Nelson Rivas was similar to the medical emergency of Edoardo Bove.

Toldo spoke to Italian broadcaster Radio Anch’Io Lo Sport, via FCInterNews. He looked back on a shocking incident of his own, in which Colombian defender Rivas collapsed in training.

Yesterday, a sudden collapse from Fiorentina midfielder Bove during a Serie A match against Inter shocked the world of football.

The match was quickly suspended, and then postponed to be played at a later date.

Both sets of players were visibly distraught during the incident.

There was good news later in the evening. Fiorentina confirmed that Bove had returned to stable condition.

However, there was a lengthy period in which the 22-year-old’s condition was uncertain.

This was hugely stressful for all the players and staff.

Toldo Recalls Rivas Incident Similar To Bove Shock “I Didn’t Know What To Do”

It is not unheard of for footballers to suffer unexpected medical emergencies, whether during matches or training sessions.

One such incident happened to Colombian former Inter defender Nelson Rivas.

This occurred during a training session in 2007.

Former keeper Toldo was at that training session. And he recalls the sense of confusion and anxiety that he experienced.

And the former keeper admitted that “I thought about it a lot last night.”

“There are moments of helplessness that pass in front of you,” Toldo went on.

“You start shouting at the doctor or the ambulance to hurry because you don’t know what to do.”

“That happened to me in training with Rivas,” Toldo looked back.

“He fainted after a blow to the head. We called over the team doctor Combi, and he performed first aid to unblock his tongue from his airway.”

“We were just kids there? And who prepares his son for first aid?”

“But unfortunately, these things happen,” Toldo said.

The former Inter keeper said that “Praise must be given to the medical system in sport.”

“The doctor is a fundamental figure,” he continued. “They carried out a quick intervention to save a young man’s life.”

“It brought tears to my eyes. I have three boys of my own, two of whom are 23 and 19.”

“If this happened to me son, I’d be scared,” Toldo said.

And the former goalkeeper also argued that “I’d upgrade the first aid courses.”

“Even just making sure there are one or two players who know what to do. For example, [former Inter winger Luis] Figo made the first moves.”
