Gaby Ruiz and Crysencio Summerville shared an on-screen reunion after the winger scored in the Netherlands’ World Cup opener, appearing on DAZN’s post-match coverage.
According to yorkshireeveningpost.co.uk, Ruiz became Leeds’ head of European recruitment in 2017 after working with Victor Orta at Middlesbrough and Elche, and both left in 2023 following Javi Gracia’s sacking and relegation.
He later reunited with Orta at Sevilla and now Real Valladolid, and also works as a DAZN analyst. The broadcast brought him together with Summerville, whom he helped sign from Feyenoord in 2020 for about £1.5m.
Summerville was patient as an 18-year-old at Elland Road before establishing himself under Daniel Farke. He won multiple awards in 2023/24 with 21 goals and 10 assists, then left when West Ham United activated a release clause of around £28m after the play-off final defeat at Wembley.
Ronald Koeman handed the winger his first senior call-up for the World Cup. He scored in the opener against Japan, then spoke to DAZN as Ruiz appeared in the studio.
Ruiz greeted him, recalled saying he would reach a World Cup, and offered heartfelt congratulations. Summerville thanked Ruiz and Victor Orta for their faith, and Ruiz signed off by backing a Netherlands win over Sweden.
Summerville’s club future is uncertain after West Ham’s relegation. His World Cup involvement is likely to prompt bids from clubs in major leagues that will test West Ham’s resolve in the summer window.
