Lee Cattermole is under serious consideration to become Hartlepool United’s next manager. According to Sunderland Echo, the vacancy follows Nicky Featherstone’s spell ending with a 3-1 defeat to Boston United as the National League season concluded.
The ex-Sunderland and Middlesbrough midfielder, who captained Sunderland and spent 10 years at the Stadium of Light, was heavily linked the last two times the job at The Vic came up. He is now viewed as a strong candidate to replace Featherstone, while the futures of Featherstone and assistant Gary Liddle are subject to talks over alternative roles.
Momentum around Cattermole has grown in the past 48 hours, with widespread reports naming him among the front-runners.
Cattermole, 38, has not managed a first team, but has coached Middlesbrough’s Under-18s and had a short spell as Bristol Rovers first-team coach. While at Boro, he formed part of a four-man interim group between the reigns of Chris Wilder and Michael Carrick.
Pools are undergoing a major summer reset. Football advisory firm Bromby and Partners has been reviewing operations at the Prestige Group Stadium in recent months, which influenced the move to appoint a new manager and end Featherstone’s stint. Thirteen players were released this week and significant squad work lies ahead.
