David Prutton gives his opinion on the links between Eric Dier and Leeds
Bayern Munich defender Eric Dier is set to join Monaco this summer, following the expiration of his contract in Bavaria, and it was recently revealed that Leeds United made a late surge to try and secure the defender’s signature.
TBR Football revealed that Leeds were among the clubs to make contact with the defender about a move whilst he was weighing up his options but ultimately weren’t successful in their pursuit. Brighton & Hove Albion, Crystal Palace, West Ham, Fulham and Brentford are all also thought to have shown an interest in Dier.
The former Tottenham man joined the German giants in January 2024 and has remained with the club ever since. It is believed that Monaco have offered Dier an initial two-year deal with an option to extend.
Despite Bayern possessing a wealth of defensive talent and a handsome budget to make improvements, the 31-year-old has held his own in Germany and played a valuable role in the club reclaiming the Bundesliga this season.
Sky Sports presenter and former EFL midfielder David Prutton exclusively told FLW that believes that Dier would’ve been a great addition for the Whites but doesn’t think Leeds will be too regretful about missing out on the deal.
“Eric Dier would have been a pretty decent addition for Leeds, given his experience and his ability at that particular level,” stated Prutton.
“Hypothetically, it could have been a good signing, as he has played for a big club in the Premier League and has international experience as well.
“However, for every Eric Dier, there'll be an abundance of other players that can do a very similar job.
“So if this is one that's passed Leeds by, I’m sure they'll be fine.
Despite missing out on Dier to Monaco, it’s a promising sign for the Whites’ supporters to see the club targeting that type of profile as they try to retain their top-flight status next season.
Recent examples of teams promoted from the Championship have shown that prior experience in the Premier League can pay dividends throughout a season, and is definitely something Daniel Farke’s recruitment team should be profiling.
So, although a deal for the Bayern defender couldn’t be pulled off, similar additions could provide an equal impact at Elland Road next term.
The Whites clinched the Championship title last weekend after finishing level on 100 points with Burnley, edging the Clarets out due to superior goal difference. Leeds came from behind to beat relegated side Plymouth, requiring an injury-time winner from Manor Solomon to seal the title.
Ultimately, Dier to Leeds wasn’t meant to be, but time will tell where the Whites opt to spend their budget throughout the summer transfer window. If they can recruit a player of a similar profile to the England international, it would certainly be impressive and a real statement of intent.
