Lee Hendrie has told FLW his verdict on the prospect of Anas Serfrioui taking over the club from Dejphon Chansiri
Lee Hendrie believes that now might be the right time for Dejphon Chansiri to sell his stake in Sheffield Wednesday.
According to The Sun, a Moroccan billionaire, Anas Sefrioui, is eyeing a potential takeover of the Championship side.
Chansiri has been at the helm of the Owls since 2015, and has overseen two runs to the play-offs in the second tier, as well as relegation to and promotion from League One.
Financial issues, including the players reportedly not being paid on time as recently as March, have led to supporters venting their frustration with the Thai businessman.
Hendrie believes that Sheffield Wednesday have a lot of potential as a club due to their historic size.
He is positive that this is now a good time for Chansiri to go and for someone with fresh ideas to invest in the team given the strong work done by Danny Rohl as manager.
“I’ve had this conversation recently, what a massive football club that is and yes they’ve got in the Championship and stayed in the Championship,” Hendrie exclusively told Football League World.
“Have probably got close and got a really good manager that’s driving them forward, I just think it would be a great time for Chansiri to sell up and get someone new in that can sort of buy into Sheffield Wednesday Football Club.
“Because I feel that at the moment there’s too many things that are holding them back and maybe Chansiri is one of the people.
“Obviously, he wants big money for the club, and I suppose it’s going to have to suit him to see whether this deal goes through.
“But I do feel that he needs a change because if someone comes in with the right vibe, the right personality to take the club forward I think that could definitely go to the next level.
“With investment, and particularly with a wealthy owner that could take them forward and have that drive, and hopefully that would be the case with the new owner.”
Sheffield Wednesday are currently 13th in the Championship table, with 56 points from 44 games played.
Chansiri is not a particularly popular owner, and the issues with player wages makes him someone that should look to sell his stake in the club.
Whether this particular deal or not goes through remains to be seen, but a change in ownership would receive a positive reaction at Hillsborough.
Sheffield Wednesday have a lot of potential, with a lot of history behind them and a reasonably big stadium that attracts big crowds.
A new owner might also be able to convince Rohl to stay amid some uncertainty over his future, which would be a great step forward for the club.
