David Prutton has identified the three best strikers in the Championship so far this season
David Prutton has named Leeds United’s Joel Piroe and Norwich City duo Josh Sargent and Borja Sainz as his top three forwards in the Championship this season.
The Spaniard is currently the top scorer in the table with a tally of 17 to his name in Johannes Hoff Thorup’s side.
Piroe is second in the standings, with 15 from 38 appearances in Daniel Farke’s team, with the Whites also sitting top of the actual table.
Meanwhile, Sargent has 12 from 24 games this year, with injuries preventing him from playing a more major role in the Canaries’ play-off push.
Prutton has praised Piroe for quietly going about his business this year while Leeds fight for automatic promotion to the Premier League.
He’s also highlighted how important Sargent is to Norwich, as noticed by their drop in form during his injury absence, while also suggesting Sainz deserves to be mentioned despite being more of a wide player.
“Joel Piroe because he is literally up there with the top goalscorers,” Prutton exclusively told Football League World.
“[He’s] quietly and effectively got about his business so far this season, with an abundance of pace and talent around him, it’s really brought the best out of him, I feel.
“Josh Sargent, I do have a fondness for given his work-rate, given the fact he’s a huge miss when he’s out of the side, as we’ve seen at times this season for Norwich City.
“Again, this is back to my previous message, which is whether Borja Sainz is a striker or a winger.
“It’s funny because that umbrella that you can put these under is forwards.
“There’s out-and-out strikers, and we’ve not seen too much of them this season, unlike that Burnley side that Vincent [Kompany] took up with starting only good wide players, so I will chuck into that Sainz as a striker/forward player.
“Because you can’t score as many goals as he has and not think he’s up there with one of the best, even if he doesn’t cover himself in glory at times, but let’s not mention that!”
Sainz is more of a wide player, but has shown great ruthlessness in front of goal this year, and deserves to be mentioned.
Of the more central options in the Championship this year, Sargent and Piroe both stand out among a strong field of competitors.
Josh Maja had a great start to the season, but has dropped off in the second half of the campaign, with injuries not helping.
Wilson Isidor, Callum Robinson, Anis Mehmeti and Josh Windass are all having solid campaigns for their respective sides, but haven’t quite hit the same heights as Sargent or Piroe.
