There is a lot of conflicting information out there about Chelsea’s plans for this summer, especially in goal.

Last week we heard some rumours about the Blues’ interest in Brighton goalkeeper Bart Verbruggen. Those were quickly followed by insider whispers that they were in fact going to stick with their current selection of stoppers.

Now there’s another wave of rumours connecting the Blues with the 22 year old. GiveMeSport are this week exclusively reporting that the team think he has “the traits to be a good fit for what they want.”

There will be competition – Manchester United are already looking to upgrade on Andre Onana, and are “contemplating” whether to rival the Blues for the Belgian. Chelsea have had Robert Sanchez, Filip Jorgensen and Djordje Petrovic all take a turn as first choice goalkeeper in the last 12 months alone, so it’s no surprise these links are hanging around.

Young Mike Penders looks talented – but he’s barely played any senior games yet and is far off being ready to start for us.

Chelsea unlikely to sanction “considerable” sum on yet another goalkeeper

We’re far more inclined to believe the club briefs that they’re happy moving forward with what they have – these sporting directors bought Sanchez, Petrovic, Jorgensen and Penders, and they’re clearly backing their own judgment that at least one of them will turn out to be good.

Verbruggen does look good, and will likely attract even more attention in the future if he continues to perform well for Brighton in the coming seasons. But as the GMS piece says, the Seagulls would demand “a considerable sum” for him already, and given how much we’ve spent on goalkeepers, we can’t imagine another addition will be sanctioned.

If we’re having this same nightmare this time next year, things could be different…
