The veteran forward’s return from injury has already made a significant impact, and keeping him fit will be key to securing a top-three finish.

With just seven games left and the Magpies sitting two points off the automatic spots, McGoldrick’s experience, leadership, and goal-scoring ability could be the difference in the coming weeks if they are to avoid the play-offs and settle things automatically.

Football League World spoke exclusively to former EFL striker and pundit Don Goodman on Notts County’s promotion push, and when asked how important McGoldrick will be in the final few weeks of the season, the ex-EFL striker was adamant that the 37-year-old is going to come up trumps.

“I don’t think there’s any doubt Notts County clearly function better when David McGoldrick is fit and firing,” Goodman told FLW.

“The six-week period that he was out saw them win two, lose two and draw three over the seven games and that was after they’d been on a brilliant unbeaten run, winning mostly.”

“So absolutely, 100% he’s a key, they've got to keep him fit. When you look at the numbers, he’s scored 14 goals this season in the league from 22 starts, coming off the bench a few times, so he’s played 29 games.”

“It’s impressive in anybody’s language, but particularly impressive when you factor in his age.”

“He’s still got the desire, he’s got the motivation and Notts County are still well and truly in for an opportunity to get to the top three, just two points off it, to secure automatic promotion. He will contribute.”

Notts County’s hopes of securing automatic promotion remain very much alive, and as Don Goodman asserts, David McGoldrick’s presence will be pivotal in the final run-in.

Having returned from a six-week injury layoff, McGoldrick wasted no time in reminding everyone of his quality, scoring a stunning goal off the bench in the Magpies’ 2-0 victory over Grimsby Town.

Manager Stuart Maynard was full of praise, describing the veteran forward as “Superman” for the way he stepped up in a crucial moment.

Currently sitting in grasp of the top three, Notts County are in the thick of the League Two automatic promotion battle.

The Magpies have suffered from injuries throughout the season, but the return of McGoldrick could not have come at a better time as they prepare for the final push for League One football.

With McGoldrick, Notts have every chance of securing a top-three finish and avoiding the unpredictability of the play-offs. Having previously played a key role in Sheffield United’s promotion to the Premier League in the 2018/19 season, McGoldrick knows exactly what it takes to get over the line.
