Boro are the latest club that Rohl is a potential candidate for.
Danny Rohl has been named as one of the managers that Middlesbrough may look to appoint as Michael Carrick's successor.
The German manager has been linked with a number of positions in England and Germany since the end of last season, with the latest being Boro.
Alex Crook has reported that Rohl, Rob Edwards, Robbie Keane and Jon Dahl Tomasson are all being considered by the Teesside hierarchy following the sacking of Carrick, which was confirmed on Wednesday.
Without officially saying it in public, Rohl has made it abundantly clear that he does not intend on leading the Owls next season.
He reportedly informed the club's ownership of this decision in April, following the first of their late payment sagas. The second of those, which has affected coaches and staff as well as players, who were the only ones hit by the first delay, has led to the EFL placing an embargo on Wednesday and they are in serious danger of receiving a three-window transfer ban.
The one thing that has so far prevented Rohl from leaving Hillsborough: his release clause. It has been reported on a number of occasions now, including by Crook, most recently, that the fee a club would need to pay to get Rohl out of his current deal, which has two years left on it, has proved to be a real barrier, and the same goes for Boro.
Wednesday's supporters will be mostly resigned to losing him at some point, but, it'll still be worrying for them to see more and more teams continually linked with their head honcho. That's what Sky Sports pundit Don Goodman exclusively told Football League World.
"I think Sheffield Wednesday fans have probably been worried for some time about the thought of losing Danny Rohl, whether that's to Middlesbrough or anybody else for that matter," said the former striker. "He seems to have been linked with every job in the Championship, so I don't think it's anything new.
"The Wednesday fans absolutely adore him, so I understand the concern. The club is in a mess, but I keep harping back to it: this buy-out clause in Rohl's deal may be the thing that keeps him at Sheffield Wednesday, which would be very, very strange, because, clearly, he's not a head coach that wants to stay working for that owner."
Middlesbrough are one of the clubs who have the financial prowess to potentially take a plunge on Rohl and pay the money needed to get him away from Wednesday. They haven't been shy in recent history about splashing cash on players, although a decent chunk of that has been funded by selling assets.
If they really saw the 36-year-old as the outstanding candidate to take over from Carrick, they should have the resources to be able to facilitate such a move.
