Don Goodman has spoken on Cardiff City's reported interest in Charlton Athletic boss Nathan Jones.

Cardiff City are searching for a new permanent head coach as they prepare for the 2025/26 League One season.

The Bluebirds parted company with Omer Riza in April and appointed Aaron Ramsey as interim head coach until the end of the 2024/25 campaign, but the 34-year-old was unable to prevent the club being relegated, and they will now play in the third tier of English football for the first time since 2003 next season.

Now, Cardiff are on the hunt for a new permanent head coach with the ability to bounce back to the Championship at the first time of asking.

Last week, Football League World exclusively revealed that Ian Evatt and Des Buckingham were being considered for the role, while several other candidates, including Brian Barry-Murphy, have also been linked with the Welsh club.

However, a fresh update from Wales Online suggests that Charlton Athletic boss Nathan Jones is likely to still be on Vincent Tan's shortlist, and he would certainly be seen as a shrewd appointment following his success in League One with the Addicks this season.

Don Goodman believes Cardiff would be "lucky" to land Jones

Sky Sports pundit, Don Goodman, spoke exclusively to Football League World regarding Cardiff's reported interest in Jones, stating that he has doubts over whether the Welshman would be keen on the move at present.

"I think Nathan Jones is a very, very ambitious, enthusiastic coach who has just worked unbelievably hard to get Charlton Athletic back into the Championship," Goodman said.

"Would he leave that scenario for Cardiff City, being a Cardiff City fan? You would think if he was not a Cardiff City fan it would not even be a question, really.

"He has got to look at the ownership and how that club is being run. There is a lack of stability. It is a very, very difficult question, but I think Cardiff City would be lucky to get Nathan Jones.

"I am not sure that he would view this Cardiff City, currently, as a project he could commit to, knowing that he would get the support and the time to get it back to where it needs to be."

Jones could be tempted by a move to Cardiff

Despite the fact that he has just ended Charlton's five-year stay in League One in his first full season in charge, Jones could be tempted by a move to his boyhood club, Cardiff City.

Of course, as Goodman alluded to, the Cardiff hotseat may not currently be as attractive as it has been during seasons gone by, but that does not mean you can completely rule Jones out of the running.

The 52-year-old spoke about his relationship with the Bluebirds when he was among the favourites to replace Erol Bulut at Cardiff back in September, as per Wales Online.

"When this kind of stuff comes up I'm very flattered to be linked with that," Jones said.

"One day - I've made no secret and been totally open - I would like to manage Cardiff. It is my hometown club - my Dad lives close.

"One day I really, really would love to manage the football club. Right now I'm Charlton manager and I'm thoroughly enjoying the project we are building."

It would be safe to assume that Jones is even more enthusiastic about Charlton as he prepares for their return to the Championship in August, but it is easy to see why his name is currently in the frame for the Cardiff job given his comments last year.
