Wolves are eyeing a blockbuster potential move for Leicester City's Abdul Fatawu ahead of a Championship return, Football League World understands

Wolves are preparing for a return to the Championship for the first time in eight years following a disastrous Premier League campaign, which is set to see the Old Gold relegated with more than a handful of games to spare.

The West Midlands outfit endured a wretched start to the season under Vitor Pereira, and while there have been some signs of life since returning former player and coach Rob Edwards to the club from Championship promotion hopefuls Middlesbrough back in November, the writing has long been on the wall for what lies ahead in the 2026/27 campaign.

Wolves have claimed just one victory from 26 matches, in which only nine points have been accumulated, leaving them 18 points adrift of Pereira's 17th-placed Nottingham Forest side with 12 fixtures remaining.

Indeed, Wolves are likely to finish as one of the worst Premier League sides in history and have already been putting the gears in motion for life outside of the top-flight, as evidenced by both Edwards' appointment and the deadline day signing of Southampton talisman Adam Armstrong earlier this month.

And now, with a Championship return edging ever closer, Football League World has learned of Wolves' interest in completing a huge raid of a potential rival in the second-tier next term.

Wolves plotting big Leicester City, Abdul Fatawu transfer raid

Football League World can exclusively reveal that Wolves are making their interest known in landing a huge deal in the summer transfer window as they prepare for the inevitability of relegation, with the Old Gold understood to be tracking Leicester City star Abdul Fatawu.

It's unclear exactly how far this interest goes at this moment in time, although FLW understands that Wolves are continually monitoring Fatawu and the winger's potential availability ahead of the summer.

Sources have revealed to FLW that Wolves are intent on building a squad capable of winning promotion from the Championship at the very first time of asking, with a significant clearout anticipated at Molineux.

And that has led Wolves to explore a potential move for Fatawu, who has re-emerged as a standout performer at Championship level once more in spite of Leicester's continued struggles both on and off-the-pitch following relegation last time out.

The tricky 21-year-old wide-man has been a consistent bright spark in an otherwise-underperforming and depleted Foxes outfit, lighting up the division with eight goals and a further seven assists from 32 outings.

Fatawu's performances haven't gone unnoticed, with Wolves surfacing as the latest admirers of his signature after previously-reported interest from Premier League pair AFC Bournemouth and Sunderland in December.

Abdul Fatawu's Leicester City transfer exit feels inevitable this summer

There is a sense of inevitability surrounding Fatawu's own future, which appears increasingly likely to lie away from the King Power Stadium following a hugely-impressive three-year stint.

The ex-Sporting CP prodigy was inspirational during his debut campaign as Leicester romped to the Championship title under Enzo Maresca and, though a crushing ACL injury prevented him from getting going at top-flight level, he's shown himself to be a cut above the second-tier once more this term and feels likely to be seeking pastures new once the season ends.

Leicester could quite well end up suffering consecutive relegations to League One, having now entered the Championship's relegation zone with a two-point disadvantage behind 21st-placed Portsmouth - who have two games in hand - after being struck with a recent six-point deduction.

Gary Rowett has been brought in to steady the ship and simply steer Leicester to survival, but with that being the one and only objective for what remains of the current campaign, it's difficult to envisage Fatawu deciding to remain in the East Midlands beyond the summer.

Whether Wolves will have the financial might or even the pulling power to complete a deal considering their Championship-bound status only remains to be seen, of course, but either way, it's a sure-fire sign of the Old Gold's ambitions ahead of next term and this development is sure to cast even more doubt on Fatawu's future at Leicester.
