Wrexham spent big during the summer transfer window, but manager Phil Parkinson could be given further backing in January.

Despite spending big in the summer transfer window, Wrexham are prepared to provide manager Phil Parkisnon with further backing in January if they are in promotion contention, sources have exclusively informed Football League World.

After winning a historic three consecutive promotions from the National League to the Championship, Wrexham overhauled their squad this summer as they prepared for life back in the second tier for the first time since 1982.

Red Dragons owners Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney had made it clear that they were not willing to just make up the numbers in the Championship, and in pursuit of their goal of Premier League football, they spent a staggering total of £33 million this summer.

Wrexham brought in a total of 13 players during an eye-catching summer transfer window, with Danny Ward, Issa Kabore, Conor Coady, Dominic Hyam, Callum Doyle, Liberato Cacace, George Thomason, Lewis O'Brien, Ben Sheaf, Josh Windass, Nathan Broadhead, Ryan Hardie and Kieffer Moore all arriving at the SToK Cae Ras.

In addition to the new arrivals, a number of the club's promotion heroes departed, including the likes of Mark Howard, Eoghan O'Connell, Tom O'Connor, Jacob Mendy, George Evans, Ollie Palmer, Steven Fletcher and Paul Mullin, while injured trio Ollie Rathbone, Andy Cannon and Jay Rodriguez have been left out of the club's 25-man squad list.

Wrexham made a slow start to the season as they picked up just one point from their opening three league games, but they registered their first win of the campaign with a 2-0 victory at Millwall on Saturday, with two new signings in Moore and O'Brien getting on the scoresheet.

Wrexham smashed their transfer record on a number of occasions this summer, and Broadhead became the club's new record signing when he made the move from Ipswich Town in a deal that could eventually be worth up to £10 million.

However, while the arrival of Broadhead grabbed many of the headlines, the Red Dragons also splashed out £2 million on Moore, £2.7 million on Hyam, £5 million on O'Brien, £6.5 million on Sheaf and up to £7.5 million on Doyle among a host of other big-money signings, and the combined total of their spending was a huge £33 million.

Despite their significant investment in the summer, it seems Reynolds and McElhenney could be set to put their hands in their pockets again in January, with sources exclusively telling FLW that they are prepared to spend big again during the winter window, but only if the club are in the mix for promotion.

As things stand, Wrexham are 15th in the early Championship table, but with the league still taking shape, they are only four points from the play-off places and six points from the automatic promotion spots, and they will be hoping to climb the table over the coming months after getting their first win of the season at Millwall on Saturday.

If the Red Dragons do find themselves in promotion contention come the turn of the year, Parkinson could be given another sizeable transfer budget, with Reynolds and McElhenney vowing to back their manager once again if they feel the top flight is within reach.

Up until this summer, Wrexham had not spent too much money in the transfer market under Reynolds and McElhenney, with the pair instead opting to invest in wages rather than transfer fees, but that has all changed as they get closer to the Premier League.

Reynolds and McElhenney have made no secret of their desire to lead the Red Dragons to the top flight, and on the basis of their transfer activity this summer, it seems they are keen to achieve that goal sooner rather than later.

Some may question whether Wrexham have slightly overpaid for certain players, but Reynolds and McElhenney's strong commitment to the club has been evident once again, and further high-profile transfer deals could be on the cards in January if the club are among the promotion contenders.
