David Alaba’s future at Real Madrid may be taking a positive turn, with the veteran defender showcasing his ability to adapt and contribute in more than one position.
After two seasons affected by injuries, Alaba now looks ready to become an important figure for Xabi Alonso’s side, thanks to his versatility.
During a behind-closed-doors friendly against Leganes, Alonso tested Alaba in a central midfield role.
The experiment was repeated in front of home fans against WSG Tirol in Austria, signalling that the Austrian international could be used in a new role this season.
Interestingly, this is not unfamiliar territory for the 33-year-old, who has played as a defensive midfielder for both Bayern Munich and the Austrian national team in the past.

The two know each other well from their time together at Bayern, and the coach is fully aware of the different ways the Austrian can help the team.
Whether stepping in for Aurelien Tchouameni to give him rest or helping build play from deep, Alaba offers options that few others can provide.
Against WSG Tirol, Alaba played 30 minutes in central midfield. While the game did not put him under significant pressure, he performed with composure, moving the ball effectively and maintaining control in tight situations.
Speaking after the match, Alaba admitted that it is not his usual position anymore but stressed that he remembers the role well and is happy to play wherever the team needs him.
If Alaba can stay fit, this positional flexibility could be key to extending his career at the Santiago Bernabeu.
With Alonso open to tactical adjustments, the Austrian’s willingness to adapt may make him a vital part of Madrid’s plans for the season ahead.
