As Hansi Flick shifts to a more merit-based rotation policy this season, one of the key highlights has been the lack of prominence of Dani Olmo.
The former RB Leipzig playmaker, who was such a key component in Barcelona’s first team last season, whenever he was available, has made just one start so far this season.
Although Olmo has featured in every game, his lack of inclusion in the starting eleven is a concerning trend at Barcelona.
A recent report from MARCA has offered some key insights as to why Olmo is not starting games for Barcelona anymore.
The first factor is his form. His numbers are underwhelming, with no goals yet and only a single assist to his name.
In matches such as the one against Rayo Vallecano or the midweek Champions League clash against Newcastle, he was presented with clear opportunities to score but failed to take them.

The second factor is the intense competition in his preferred position. Olmo thrives as an attacking midfielder, but Flick currently has an abundance of options there.
Fermin Lopez has started the season on fire, with decisive goals against Valencia and a brace in the Gamper Trophy, while Ferran Torres and Raphinha are also capable of operating in that position.
Olmo’s struggles are not limited to club football either. With Spain, he played just 19 minutes in the last international break, a surprising drop for someone usually considered a key piece under Luis de la Fuente.
The playmaker’s struggles have come in the midst of reports linking him with a move to Paris Saint-Germain recently, with Luis Enrique reportedly interested in his services.
Still, Olmo has remained calm so far. With Fermin dipping slightly in form, Sunday’s game against Getafe could provide the window for Olmo to prove himself again.
