How much longer will Manuel Neuer stand between the posts of FC Bayern? This question is currently not only on the minds of the fans, but also the club management of the German record champions. In an interview with the Abendzeitung München, President Herbert Hainer has now revealed how the club is dealing with the situation surrounding its long-serving captain – and what its plan is for the future.
Even though Neuer made a mistake in the 2:2 draw in Berlin, the goalkeeper is still a top performer in sporting terms. In the 2:1 win against Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League, the FCB captain put in a world-class performance and was named Man of the Match.
Neuer celebrates his 40th birthday in March, but there is no sign of his motivation or fitness waning. In a recent interview with BILD, he explained: „It’s a question of health, fitness and motivation. But it’s also about what happens to the club next season.“
The 2014 world champion does not want to make a decision about his future until the spring.

FC Bayern are taking the goalkeeper’s reticence in stride. President Hainer emphasised: „We have agreed with him that there is no pressure. If he feels physically fit, he will decide for himself in the spring how he wants to continue. And then we will sit down.“
This means that the ball is in Neuer’s court. If the record-breaking keeper wants to continue his career, the chances of a contract extension beyond 2026 are very good.
Even in the event of a departure, the club is well prepared. Jonas Urbig is a young keeper who is already being developed as a long-term solution. In addition, goalkeepers Daniel Peretz (HSV) and Alexander Nübel (VfB Stuttgart), who are currently on loan, will return to Munich in the summer of 2026.
Bayern is therefore prepared for every scenario – including the day when the Neuer era comes to an end. However, there is currently little to suggest that this day will come soon.
Neuer remains the measure of all things – in terms of sport, character and as a figure of identification. And as long as the captain still has an appetite for soccer, he will keep FC Bayern’s goal.
