Fabrizio Romano has the latest on the future of Leicester City legend Jamie Vardy, amid interest from Sheffield Wednesday in the striker...

Jamie Vardy - much like his beloved Sheffield Wednesday as well as former side Leicester City - suffered relegation in 2025/26 after Cremonese lost 4-1 to Como.

Wins against Pisa and Udinese prior to that, with the striker scoring in both, were not enough for the English striker to avoid the drop from Serie A. It sealed the same fate as Vardy's two favourite clubs, with Sheffield Wednesday joining Leicester in League One in 2026/27.

In total, the centre-forward played 29 times for the Italian side. In a season hit by injury, he managed seven goals and three assists for the club after leaving Leicester on 500 games played and 200 goals scored.

Vardy could be a deadly weapon in League One, having never played at that level. He was signed from Fleetwood Town in the National League, skipping League One and Two to feature for Leicester in the Championship and Premier League.

Vardy has already undertaken some major life changes by leaving Leicester after 13 years, with a move to Italy for the veteran striker and his family. It's been revealed that a documentary about the Vardy's is coming soon as well.

The 39-year-old has been linked with a return to Leicester, albeit those reports were played down by Rebekah Vardy. Despite the 39-year-old's age, he is now set for his next chapter in his playing career and perhaps Leicester or Wednesday will have eyes on the latest development.

Fabrizio Romano has taken to X (formerly Twitter) to explain that Vardy will leave Cremonese as a free agent this summer after their relegation. He states that the striker is ready for a new chapter.

Sheffield Wednesday have been linked to Vardy, amid talks between the hierarchy about the possibility of moving for the striker, and it's abundantly clear that the Leicester legend loves Wednesday as his boyhood club.

He scored 145 goals in 342 Premier League games and 38 in 98 Championship games, so could League One be the next step after scoring for fun higher than that?

For both Leicester and Sheffield Wednesday, the idea of turning to Vardy after relegation to League One would make perfect sense. Goals remain the obvious selling point, as he should score for fun at that level.

Even in the latter stages of his career, Vardy still possesses the movement and penalty-box instincts to get chances. That ruthless edge is what lower-league defences would struggle to contain across a long campaign, even if he would have to be used sparingly at his age.

Beyond that, though, comes the mentality factor. Leicester would be leaning on a modern club legend who knows exactly what it takes to drag standards upwards during difficult periods, while Wednesday could appeal to the emotional connection of a lifelong supporter returning to galvanise the fanbase and dressing room alike.

In a division where character is often just as important as quality, Vardy’s leadership, experience, work-rate, and winning mentality could prove to be transformative for either club. He would set standards both on and off the pitch.
