  • There has been no further movement between Enzo Fernandez & Man City for a potential transfer
  • Any additional discussions will have to wait until after the conclusion of the FIFA World Cup
  • A move to the Etihad Stadium would see Fernandez reunite with ex-Chelsea boss Enzo Maresca

Manchester City are yet to hold talks to explore a summer swoop for Chelsea and Argentina midfielder Enzo Fernandez, as per a new report.

The summer transfer window has already seen Manchester City splash the cash on getting Enzo Maresca what he needs for his first season in the dugout at the Etihad, with the main signing being that of Elliot Anderson from Nottingham Forest.

The Sky Blues have paid club record £116 million for the 23-year-old England international midfielder, surpassing the £100 million fee they paid Aston Villa for Jack Grealish in 2021.

Why are Man City interested in Enzo Fernandez?

However, officials at the Etihad Stadium are understood to be exploring further midfield reinforcements – as they were reported to be interested in Chelsea’s Enzo Fernandez, who has been linked with a move away from Stamford Bridge this summer.

While a move to the Etihad Stadium would be a new start for the Argentinian midfielder, it would be a reunion with Maresca, who coached him for a year-and-a-half at Stamford Bridge.

Fernandez flourished in his opening season under Maresca at Chelsea, recording 13 goal involvements across 36 games in all competitions for the south-west London outfit.

Report: Fernandez’s future to be sorted after FIFA World Cup

However, it appears that beyond some initial speculation, there hasn’t been any additional movement on talks between the Etihad Stadium brass and Fernandez, as reported by transfer insider Fabrizio Romano.

This will reportedly remain the case until the Argentinian’s World Cup campaign comes to an end, according to Romano, who insists that his future will be negotiated after the end of the global spectacle.

The World Cup has been a big part of Fernandez’s career thus far, having lifted the highly coveted trophy in 2022, which came shortly before his £106.7 million move to the Premier League in January 2023.

City’s interest in Fernandez would make sense given the departure of an offensive engine in Bernardo Silva, who was a key cog in former manager Pep Guardiola‘s machine for nine seasons prior to the former’s free transfer to Real Madrid.
