Transfer insider Fabrizio Romano has provided an update on Manchester City’s interest in Nottingham Forest’s Elliot Anderson and Newcastle United’s Sandro Tonali.

City are eyeing a double swoop for Anderson and Tonali this summer as they anticipate an increasingly likely departure for club captain Bernardo Silva, who is out of contract in June.

Rodri has also opened the door to joining Real Madrid as he enters the last 12 months of his current deal, with Mateo Kovacic and Kalvin Phillips also likely to be moved on by Manchester City sporting director Hugo Viana.

The Blues are vying for a domestic treble in their first full season under Viana and after making nine new signings for Pep Guardiola since last summer, the Portuguese executive is set for a busy transfer window ahead of the 2026-27 campaign.

Do Man City want both Anderson and Tonali?

Manchester City are interested in signing both Anderson and Tonali this summer, with recent reports indicating that the Blues’ pursuit of the latter is in addition to the former, who leads Viana’s transfer wish-list.

Executives at the Etihad Stadium are leading the race to sign Anderson, who is firmly expected to leave relegation-threatened Nottingham Forest this summer amid additional interest from Manchester United – as he also prepares to start in midfield for England alongside Declan Rice at the FIFA World Cup across the atlantic.

City are also believed to be closely monitoring Tonali’s situation at St. James’ Park as after a disappointing season for Eddie Howe and co, the 25-year-old Italy international is also keen to challenge for major trophies at an elite European club.

Should Silva and Rodri leave this summer – though it is worth noting that is a very unlikely scenario – City will go big in the transfer market and make big-money offers to land Anderson and Tonali.

Romano update on City midfield transfers

In a recent video on his YouTube channel, transfer insider Fabrizio Romano said: “As I told you before, Pep Guardiola’s side are pushing strongly for Elliot Anderson, the talented midfielder from Nottingham Forest. Anderson is very high on City’s shortlist.

“They appreciate his versatility, creativity, and intelligence on the ball, but they do not want to disrupt Forest in the middle of their relegation battle, so things are quiet for now. Still, City are preparing for this move. And interestingly, Anderson is also admired by Manchester United.”

On Tonali, Romano has relayed that Manchester United are leading the early pursuit. “It is important to note that Manchester United have already made contact with Tonali’s camp to be informed about his situation,” the journalist added.

“There is still no agreement, no negotiation stage yet, but the interest is real and consistent. Tonali appreciates the idea of returning to a bigger European stage if all parties align, so this one will be worth keeping an eye on.

“There is also interest from Arsenal, confirmed, but again nothing advanced there either. For Italian clubs, including Juventus, the deal would be financially almost impossible. So as of today, United like Tonali, early contact made, and the midfielder is aware of their interest. It is still early, but expect this to heat up later in the window.”
