Manchester City have made a call regarding Antoine Semenyo amid growing interest from across the Premier League in the Bournemouth forward ahead of January.
Executives at the Etihad Stadium are mulling over the activation of Semenyo’s attractive £65 million release clause next month, with City facing stiff competition in the form of Manchester United, Liverpool and Tottenham amongst others.
Pep Guardiola is believed to be driving City’s interest in the 25-year-old, who City consider can shore up their frontline to power their aspirations for silverware as the season progresses and shoulder a portion of the goalscoring responsibility that has all but single-handedly been assumed by Erling Haaland.
Speaking in his latest wide-ranging transfer update on YouTube, journalist Fabrizio Romano has revealed both Manchester City and Manchester United have made calls regarding Semenyo in the last few days.
“For Semenyo, the situation is really heating up,” said Romano. “Tottenham are really interested, but this depends on what the player wants to do. But Tottenham have genuine interest.
“This week, again, Manchester United and Manchester City called to understand the situation. Between Monday and Tuesday, some calls took place to understand the situation of Semenyo – £65 million release clause.”
“So these three clubs all called. Liverpool already called in November, but are now assessing what they want to do in January, and also what’s going to happen with Mo Salah before deciding on Semenyo.
“So, the situation is really interesting. Many clubs into the race. Again, Tottenham are very aggressive on this one, but this depends on the player. Tottenham are very interested, but this depends on the player. Manchester City and Manchester United are in contact.
“Man United have an interest in the player but they already invested important money on Matheus Cunha, on Bryan Mbeumo – so we have to see financially what they can do in terms of £65 million release clause from Bournemouth.
“But the final decision is with the player, more than money, than Financial Fair Play – it’s the player deciding here. City and United both called in the last 48 hours. Then, Tottenham have been spending a lot of time in the last few days trying to attack the situation for Semenyo.
“And then there is Liverpool in the background – interested since November – but again, this depends on what happens with Mo Salah, and also on Liverpool’s financial intentions because maybe they could have different priorities in January.”
City are expected to be somewhat active in the January transfer market, though United are actively looking to capitalise on ongoing speculation around Pep Guardiola’s future at the Etihad Stadium to swap Semenyo to the red side of Manchester.
