Facundo Pellistri is about to boost Manchester United’s transfer kitty, should his anticipated return to the Premier League go through.
Back in 2020, United were desperate to sign right-wingers, so when a chance arose to snap up one of the most exciting up-and-coming Uruguayan wingers, the Red Devils quickly seized it.
Consequently, in a deal worth around £7.2 million, the Red Devils convinced Penarol to sell them Pellistri.
However, the Premier League is a tough nut to crack, so the club could not immediately introduce the young winger.
Instead, the 20-time English champions gradually eased him into the English game, initially assigning him to the Under-23s setup.
After six games with the junior team, they then sent him out on loan to Deportivo Alaves for the second half of the 2020-21 season and throughout the 2021-22 campaign.
Following his loan exploits in Spain, Pellistri returned to make 13 appearances for the United senior side, though he never truly made his mark.
In the second half of the 2023-24 season, he moved to Granada on loan, making 15 appearances for the Spanish side.
By the summer of 2024, it had become clear he would never make it at Old Trafford.
As a result, Pellistri joined Panathinaikos in a £5 million deal, though the 20-time English champions wisely inserted a buy-back clause, along with a 50 per cent sell-on clause should the Greek side later sell the South American.
According to a report from Sport 24, Premier League newcomers are keen on bringing Pellistri back to English football.
The report states that “Hull is considering the case of the Uruguayan winger. Information that is reinforced by the close business relations between the owners of the two teams, Ajun Ilitzali in the English team and Yiannis Alafouzos.”
It further explains that the relationship between Hull and Panathinaikos could see the two sides strike a deal, with the English club offered a clear chance to sign Pellistri.
INEOS will be watching closely, since they stand to collect half of any agreed fee.
With the Red Devils needing to significantly strengthen their squad this summer, given their return to Champions League football, windfalls such as Pellistri’s could prove extremely useful.
