Benjamin Nygren found the net to give Martin O’Neill’s side the advantage just before half-time and ultimately secured the points.

Despite trailing, Falkirk remained in the contest after the interval and pushed hard for an equaliser. A pivotal moment arrived in the second half when Kasper Schmeichel produced a sharp stop to keep out Ethan Williams, a chance McGlynn was convinced was destined for the back of the net.

Speaking post-match, McGlynn said via The Herald: “We deserved to take something from that game. We were the better team first half, we created some really good opportunities.

“I can’t remember our goalkeeper being so quiet, Scott Bain’s not had an awful lot to do. That’s unusual. I thought both full-backs took care of the wingers. Our guys done great at the game, I feel gutted for them.

“I thought Schmeichel made an amazing save, to be honest with you. I’m just waiting on the ball hitting the back of the net, and he’s made a great save. Although he’s been criticised for some goals recently, you could say he earned the points for Celtic tonight.”

Despite the positive assessment from McGlynn, Martin O’Neill cut a far less satisfied figure, expressing reservations about Celtic’s performance in victory.

The Celtic manager said: “We didn’t play well in the game. We saw it through and we can play much, much better.[It] just seems strange in contrast to where we were so good on Saturday and tentative tonight, lost the ball in areas where we shouldn’t have been doing it.”

“Overall, I think Falkirk would have found themselves really unlucky to be behind at half-time in the game. I thought we pressed a bit better in the second half, but overall, we didn’t play well in the game.”

Celtic are six points behind league leaders Hearts with 16 games to go. The Hoops face Auchinleck Talbot in the Scottish Cup fourth-round at Rugby Park on Sunday before travelling to Bologna in the Europa League a week today then head back to Scotland to prepare for the crucial Scottish Premiership match against Hearts a week on  Sunday.
