Farroupilha, based in Pelotas about 400 kilometres from Porto Alegre, have announced 36-year-old striker Walter after an agreement that nearly collapsed.

According to Globo.com, he had shaken hands earlier in the week but almost reversed his decision to remain close to family, with his wife pregnant. The club referenced that in unveiling him, posting 'ele vem' and sharing a message in which he acknowledged the situation.

Walter said he accepted because Farroupilha are a century-old club seeking to reawaken, while admitting the family dilemma, and he aims to help as best he can.

The team will enter the Copa Federação Gaúcha de Futebol next week, then the Terceirona Gaúcha from September onwards.

Farroupilha last played 18 months ago, on 27 October 2024, in the state third tier. Financial problems kept them out of official competitions in 2025, and the board are also focused on building the Arena Ninho do Cardeal.

Walter arrives from Atlético de Alagoinhas in Bahia, where he made seven appearances across the Copa do Brasil, Série D and the Campeonato Baiano, all as a substitute, without a goal or an assist.

He has long battled weight issues, saying earlier this year he lost 53 kilograms, dropping from 145 to 92 through diet and exercise. His last spell in Rio Grande do Sul was São Borja in 2023, a single 12-minute outing, before five games for Pelotas. A product of Inter, he played there until 2010 then joined Porto, with later stints at Fluminense, Goiás, Athletico and others.
