FC Utrecht and AZ send scouts to watch promising Cambuur winger Benjamin Pauwels | OneFootball

Cambuur winger Benjamin Pauwels has found reward for an excellent recent run of form, with interest arriving from FC Utrecht and AZ Alkmaar. As per VoetbalPrimeur, the Belgian spoke of the rumours in an interview with the Leeuwarder Courant.

Pauwels came over from Beerschot last summer, and made up for hardly playing under trainer Dirk Kuyt, to score four goals and provide eight assists in 34 Keuken Kampioen Divisie matches. Last winter, he negotiated with Mexican club FC Juárez, but nothing developed. According to LC, however, he is still in demand, with clubs at home and abroad.

Scouts from AZ and FC Utrecht recently sat in the stands for Pauwels. “That’s true, but I’m not really thinking about it yet,” says the winger. “My dad always says: focus on the matches you have now. Because if I play six bad matches now, for example, I shouldn’t expect all those clubs to remain interested.”

He feels flattered nonetheless. “It’s nice when certain clubs are interested. That means you’re doing well. There are some interesting ones, but I’m not really into thinking about that now.”

Pauwels first wants to end the season well in Leeuwarden, where he has a contract until the summer of 2027. That said, he does admit that he keeps a move in the back of his mind.

“Only if it feels good and if I think it is the right step. My development is paramount. For example, it is nice to be active in the Eredivisie, but what is it worth if you don’t play? That is something I have to think about carefully.”
