Just a few minutes after Harry Kane rescued a point for Bayern with a penalty at the end of the home game against 1. FSV Mainz 05 (2-2), he was already setting his sights on the next goals. Of course, the draw at home was disappointing, he said in an interview. The goal of ending the year with two wins had been missed - so now three points were a must in the final game at 1. FC Heidenheim. "We want to win on Sunday so we can be really satisfied when we head into the winter break."
Kane's Christmas wish will no doubt be shared by anyone who supports FC Bayern. Not least since the record champions have always treated their supporters by successfully wrapping up the Hinrunde in recent years. FCB have not lost their last Bundesliga game of the year since a 3-2 defeat to Mönchengladbach at the end of 1984. In 40 of the end of year games since then, the Munich men have recorded 26 wins and 14 draws. In the past 14 years, they've actually always won their last league game - the last time they didn't was in December 2012, when they fought out a 1-1 draw at home to Gladbach.
Having a run like that behind you makes it easy to look ahead. "For us, it means putting the fact we picked up just one point behind us quite quickly and then trying to get another win at Heidenheim," said Max Eberl. Bayern have had an "outstanding calendar year so far", continued the board member for sport. The 2-2 draw against the Rhine side can't tarnish that. Of 32 Bundesliga games in 2025, FCB only lost the home game against Bochum in March (3-2). The Munich men are unbeaten on the road and, with a point at Heidenheim, could now go a year without a Bundesliga away defeat for the third time after 1986 and 2013.
If Bayern continue to score like they have done of late, there's nothing standing in the way of successfully wrapping up the year on Sunday. Their 103 Bundesliga goals in 2025 mean the Munich men have smashed through the 100-goal mark in a calendar year for just the second time since 2021, when they found the back of the net 116 times.
