Fede Valverde has been handed a one-match suspension for his Madrid derby red card, a result Real Madrid will view as a minimum outcome.
The Uruguayan was dismissed at the Bernabeu for a strong challenge on Atletico Madrid’s Alex Baena. The Technical Committee of Referees informed the Spanish Football Federation that Jose Luis Munuera Montero’s decision was correct, then the Competition Committee ruled on Wednesday, and Diario AS reports it opted for a single match.
Serious foul play could have led to two games, but the Committee settled on the lowest sanction. Real Madrid appealed, arguing he had tried to play the ball but mistimed the tackle, a stance the Committee rejected as it backed Munuera Montero’s interpretation.
Valverde will miss Real Madrid’s first match after the international break, away to Mallorca at Son Moix. He will be available to face Girona the following week, although that fixture falls between the two legs of their Champions League quarter-final against Girona, so there is a chance he is rested.
Being without Valverde at Mallorca is a setback given his recent form, but the club can take comfort that a two-match ban, which was possible, has been avoided.
