Federico Chiesa has not ruled out the possibility of leaving Liverpool and returning to Italy in the summer transfer window.

The forward won the Premier League after signing for the Reds last August, moving from Juventus for a £10 million transfer fee.

The 27-year-old struggled for gametime, though, with early season fitness issues restricting him to just one top-flight start all season under manager Arne Slot.

Chiesa is now targeting a return to pre-season on 8 July, but may be on the move this summer in a bid to boost his chances of making the Italy squad for next year’s Fifa Men’s World Cup in North America.

“That’s something to think about during the summer,” the Italian told La Gazzetta dello Sport when asked if he could return to his homeland.

“My family, my agent and I have a great relationship with Liverpool, and the goal is to be ready for the pre-season. We’ll find the best solution for everyone.

“I work every day with a Liverpool programme to be in top shape for the tests on July 8.

“While out of the squad (at Juventus), I was able to train in great condition, but I missed playing friendlies. I had to start from scratch at Liverpool and that held me back.

“I hope (next season) it’s my season. My dream is to participate in the World Cup.”

Chiesa registered two goals and two assists in 14 appearances in all competitions, and scored a consolation goal in added time of liverpool’s League Cup final defeat to Newcastle United in March.
