Federico Valverde hit an improbable first-half hat-trick as Real Madrid seized control of their Champions League last-16 first leg against Manchester City. As reported by L'Équipe.
His treble was crowned by a gem. After a lobbed pass from Brahim Diaz, he flicked the ball over Marc Guéhi with a sombrero, then crashed a right-foot volley past Gianluigi Donnarumma to complete it inside 45 minutes.
With Kylian Mbappé absent, Madrid found another match-winner in the Uruguayan. He dominated the opening period to turn the tie their way.
Valverde, the team’s versatile operator, started on the right of midfield and reminded everyone of his eye for goal.
Madrid led 3-0 before the interval, and these were Valverde’s first Champions League goals of the season.
