Optimism is back at Manchester United following positive results against Premier League leaders Liverpool and Arsenal in the FA Cup.

The atmosphere was gloomy at the start of the year after United ended 2024 disastrously, losing four consecutive games across all competitions, including two home losses.

Heading into the game at Anfield, there was fear that Liverpool could inflict another heavy defeat on United, but they showed character and resilience to claim a draw.

The Red Devils’ new-found tenacity was at another level at the Emirates Stadium on Sunday.

Bruno Fernandes gave them the lead, but Diogo Dalot’s red card handed the Gunners the advantage.

Gabriel Magalhaes restored parity, and captain Martin Odegaard should have given them the victory from the penalty spot.

Altay Bayindir saved the spot kick to force the game into extra time and then penalties, culminating in a win for United.

The results against Liverpool and Arsenal were not foreseen due to the previous results, but Fernandes is not surprised they have improved under manager Ruben Amorim.

He told Sky Sports: “Obviously, the manager has his idea, and we understand. As a player, we believe what he believes, so there is no way he does not make you believe it.

“He made us understand that what we were doing would give us the right results if done the right way, and that is the most important thing we had in the period we were not getting results.

“We just have to understand that if we can keep this level of performance, the fans will be behind us.”

Having performed well at Liverpool and Arsenal, it is not lost on the Portuguese midfielder that they must replicate their performances at Old Trafford.

Fernandes wants them to make Old Trafford hostile to play for opponents – making them ‘fear any moment that United could score a goal’.

He also understands that they must show ‘they can deliver every three days’ and urged the fans ‘to be behind’ them to do that.

Fernandes expressed his excitement for Joshua Zirkzee, the hero against the Gunners, stating that ‘the script’ was done for him to shine before the visit to the Emirates Stadium.

The United captain wants ‘everyone to be happy’ and to make them feel ‘important’ like he is at the club.
